Divan historique on "Security" in Paris

At the invitation of the German Historical Institute (Deutsches Historischen Instituts (DHI)), Professor Eckart Conze visited Paris in order to introduce his new book 'A History of Securitization' ("Geschichte der Sicherheit. Entwicklung – Themen – Perspektiven" (Göttingen 2018)). The book and its topic were presented at the institute's "Divan historique", a get-together of multiple scientist at which they discuss a recent publication in the field of German historical science in order to extend its popularity beyond the German borders. Besides Professor Conze, Professor Laurence Badel (Université Paris 1, Panthéon-Sorbonne), Professor Corine Defrance (CNRS Paris) and Professor Ulrich Pfeil (Université de Lorraine, Metz) participated in the “Divan” at Hotel Duret-de-Chevry, the DHI's official seat.

Professor Thomas Maissen, the DHI's director, introduced the event and after a short keynote speech from Eckart Conze, the discussion confirmed the differences between traditional security research, focussed on statehood and foreign policy, and modern approaches as pursued by the SFB.
The debate then turned towards the benefits of theoretical approaches from social sciences as well as the overlaps and limits of historical security research and historical peace research and, concomitantly, the general relation of security and peace. Participants and audience alike, critically reflected on how the boom of securtiy research across various disciplines is based on a general increase of security and insecurity issues in social and political debate. Against this backdrop, the "Divan historique" contributed to self-reflection not only for historical security research.
